Carrotus Castle - My Ordinary Life (Robyn)

If I’m talking about YTPMV to anyone, I could never skip past Robyn. Her videos, and especially this one, influenced a lot of my perception of this genre of video when I was younger.

Everything is just so masterfully done, from the incredibly fun visuals to the snappy audio. Even now, the video still holds up SO well. I still can’t believe this was released in 2015!

Gravity Candy (Ray)

This is another classic that I idolized, I remember this video just straight up blew my mind. I’d been watching YTPMVs since 2012/2013, but didn’t start using Sony Vegas until 2018, so seeing this back then always had me thinking, “god, how can I do this?”

Really clever visual segments, such as the Polaroid wall, stuck out a lot for me. Love watching it now as it’s like a mini-time capsule of the era. Also the PinoyAnime.TV watermark always makes me laugh so hard

I’ll Face Myself (Supreme)

A video that will always stick with me. From the stunningly clean audio, the gorgeous visuals, the clever usage of simple graphic assets, all the references to the entire franchise and original Persona 4 opening beautifully scattered throughout the video: everything had me clapping like a fat seal on my first watch. I’m rewatching it right now and it’s still so good. Shoutout to all Filipinos. Also, super off-topic: but I bought a PS Vita specifically for Persona 4 Golden back in 2019 and that was still one of the greatest purchases of my life, so play it if you haven’t already.

I feel sick! (Taichan)

Taichan is one of my favorite creators, and it was a little tough picking a specific video from him, but this video is one of my favorite videos to go back to. It’s not very easy to make consistently entertaining visuals, especially for a four minute song, but he knocked it right out of the park. Extremely fun use of composition, a color palette that’s rich and vibrant, and he was honestly an early adopter of a lot of visual effects that I have seen more prominent in modern YTPMVs throughout recent years!

Quiksave (meltdrum)

A very important video for me, one where if it pops up in my feed, there’s no way I’m not clicking on it. Another video that’s held up so well, featuring fun sampling and audio that sounds better than the original song (in my opinion)… This video came out a few years before I tried to start making my own videos, and it was a big inspiration, even for a lot of my current works. I’m really thankful to have been able to talk to meltdrum over the past year and it’s been so fun learning about how much we had in common regarding our love for this medium. Very honored to call them a friend!
