The semiannual Otomad top 5 survey results are out! This project, organized by Otomad Radio, is held using Niconico’s mylist system as a submission form, allowing each participants to create their own top 5 videos, and comment on them. Don’t hesitate to check out the full list below, you may very well discover a new favorite of your own!

On this very day, MADCORE.wav is being hosted in Shanghai! This Otomad focused event consists of video exhibitions, DJ sets, and other live activities, involving 30 different guest creators!

Sorimix2

Another Otomad event, Sorimix2, taking place in South Korea, will be held on August 8th! Over twenty Otomad creators will put on a performance for fans to enjoy!

Desert DONK Dreamway (kad)

Definitely a video that you can’t just watch once. I love videos where I notice something new practically every time I watch it, and Desert DONK Dreamway is no exception; there are sources featured that were doing the rounds on TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, even Vine and others, yet everything is worked together so well with clever transitions and great joke setups that the result is incredibly fun. Even with the huge variety of sources, I can’t overstate the quality of the mixing, and the super smooth visuals to match.

【音MAD】ポンコツチェンソー (nemu)

Ponkotsu Chainsaw is totally a masterpiece, from start to finish! One of the first things I noticed was how masterfully the samples are mixed so that everything has the perfect amount of presence. In particular, the BGM’s kick drum and guitar here fit really well into the rest of the audio. All the visual elements are really creatively presented and transitioned between, and I especially love the aesthetic during the chorus, which fits very well with the way the characters and text are animated.

本庄オーバーライド (星明隊)

Honshou Override sees the participants’ efforts come through for a well-rounded and cohesive result while still showing off everyone’s individual style. I’m especially a fan of Kekkaku’s visuals from the chorus section; it’s such an interesting take on the song. The segment directly after Kekkaku’s is also extremely cool, with every onscreen component seeming so intently included and manipulated: The halftone pattern in the background, the grooving musical notes, the flowing hearts, and the kinetic typography are all so perfect.

いますぐ転寝【ゆめにっき】 (benibame)

Imasugu Utatane is the first time in years I’ve seen Ogachoco being involved in a video (a creator who’s very influential to me) so I was overjoyed to see him credited for the audio here. The careful sound design which makes full use of Yume Nikki’s SFX and the beautiful visuals which similarly incorporate lots of elements from all over the game means there’s a lot here for me to love. I’m very fond of Madotsuki’s vocals here, they’re quite cute and remind me of the ones he did for his Matryoshka video. Benibane did great on the visuals as well; the visual segment from the perspective of Madotsuki’s TV is such a cool idea and works very well.

Re:Sample Staff Pick

MMaker: ohmyゴロック (MatrixMarioX)

Every possible bit of audio material getting squeezed out from a crusty, 10-second long, 240p YouTube video, from 2008 – and making them sing a full chorus by sampling from a 3 word phrase – is in many ways an embodiment of this genre to me.
